    • Windows 7's taskbar is undoubtedly a great addition to Windows, but if you've got more than one application window open, you've got to either click twice or patiently hover to navigate to an open window. Reader Richard details how he fixed this:

I've been frustrated as of late with the Windows 7 taskbar (which led me to try hot-dogging it on the left-hand side as detailed here—by the way GREAT and useful tips in the 331 comments!). The fundamental problem was that you needed two clicks to navigate to your document if you have two instances of a program running. Or you're stuck with hovering for what feels like an eternity.

At Windows 7 Forums I finally found a nice step in the right direction. Full post is here, but summarized below. In short, this hack causes an applications last active window to activate when you click the taskbar icon, and the next window in the second click, etc. The hover preview still works if you hover to begin with, but if you want the preview after you've click on an app's icon in the taskbar, you can Ctrl+Click to bring it back. The current default settings are the exact opposite (that is, Ctrl+Click cycles through the last active windows of an application).

      Launch regedit.exe (Win+R, then paste regedit.exe)

Navigate in the left tree control to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

      Go to Edit->New->DWORD (32-bit) Value

      Name the value LastActiveClick

Hit enter to assign the value and change it to 1

Restart Explorer and you're good to go.

To restart Explorer without rebooting, open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and end the Explorer.exe process. Then create a new task (under "File") and paste "explorer.exe".

      • My weekly review agenda

This is the agenda for my weekly review. Am I missing something important? One nice trick that I have started doing is to schedule my next weekly review, during the review :-) I also like to do the review out of the office, away from distractions and calls.

        • Review calendar from previous week. Did I miss anything?
        • Review the calendar of the current week. Get an overview. Am I over committed? Should I move appointments? Do I have  tasks set up to prepare for each meeting?
        • Groom task list. Oh so boring, but must be done. Check off done tasks. Write better descriptions where suitable.
        • Groom project list.  Oh so boring, but must be done. Move  projects to Someday/Maybe that seem "stuck". Delete projects that are not really projects but rather a group of tasks and appointments. Projects with a lot of  "next actions" are likely candidates for removal!
        • Create next actions. Make sure that all projects have next actions tasks.
        • Review the "@waiting for" list. Remind people about their commitments. That is my favorite part of the entire GTD system :-)

    • weird stuff you can deep-six in the freezer and maybe save some money in the process.

      * Candles: Keep your wax candles in the freezer and they'll burn longer. It's especially good for slim table tapers that normally burn very fast.

      * Batteries: A number of studies have shown that storing batteries in the freezer helps them retain their charge longer. This is less true for alkaline batteries (freezing extends their shelf life by only about 5%) than it is for NiMH and Nicad batteries often used in electronics. Keeping NiMH batteries in the freezer can boost battery life by 90%.

      Story continues below

      * Wine Cubes: Lots of people already keep alcohol in the freezer, when you have a little leftover wine from dinner, pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze it. "Wine cubes" are perfect to use in making stock and other cooking.

      * Wooden Voodoo Mask: A carved wooden mask I picked up at Mardi Gras last year is showing the telltale pinholes of a woodworm infestation. As they know in the furniture refinishing business, placing a wooden item in the deep freezer for a couple of weeks will kill woodworms and their eggs.

      * Pantyhose: Like Grandma Yeager, I don't wear them, but my wife sure does. She swears that if she keeps her pantyhose in the freezer, they're less likely to run and they last longer. (I just can't imagine how she gets up enough courage to slide into an icy pair every morning.)
